This was one of the most exciting times during the movie shoot where the film crews blew up two sets and shot another one full of holes. They were all filmed in the late nights of December 1981 and in sub-zero temperatures. All of these locations will be on the "Rambo tour map" which you will pick up at the Hope Visitor Centre
The location where Rambo blows up the gas station was located on Old Hope Princeton Way and Hwy 1 across from the Shell Gas Station. This was a set made to be destroyed for the final climatic scene
The Outpost was another set built to be blown up by Rambo which was located right in the middle of the intersection of Commission Street and 3 Ave.
The Hope Police station was built for two purposes. One was too be an integral part of the movie, both at the beginning and during the very climatic end. The next was that it had to built to code so it could be used as a senior's center after the movie shoot was over.
When Rambo is brought downstairs by Deputy Galt and company, he is actually now inside the old BC Penitentiary that was originally on Columbia Street in New Westminster, B.C.
The Hope Police station did not have a downstairs as shown in the movie so they moved that scene over to the B.C. Pen which was already decommissioned. It was torn down a couple of years later and is now a huge complex of apartments and townhouses.
I would like to send a special thank you to Don Mackay for inviting my friend Chris Wergeland and I to his home in North Vancouver. Of all the people I ever spoke to that were involved in the movie, Don was one of the best. He had some great stories of the shoot and when he hosed down Sylvester Stallone in the Jail cell in New Westminster. He was very nice to let us have some pictures that he took back in the day. Don has since passed away.
